COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A rescued pregnant dog from a southeast Missouri property gave birth to nine puppies and is recovering at the Animal Rescue Corps facility (near Nashville). Residents had sought help after dangerously cold weather on Jan. 19.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau County will host an American Red Cross Disaster Action Team training on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Emergency Operations Center (3555 Veterans Memorial Drive) to fill limited volunteer spots; interested residents should register in advance via the Red Cross Volunteer Connection site.  Fox 23
  • SEMO Electric Cooperative sent a crew at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday to Pontotoc, Mississippi to help clear trees, raise utility poles and restore power amid icy conditions similar to those seen in 2009 — nearby cooperatives from southeast Missouri also joined the effort.  KFVS12
  • The Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Missouri will be held at Cape County Park North at 10 a.m. on Feb. 7 to raise funds for athletes—participants must raise $75 with their registration fee counting toward that minimum, and extra incentives will be available.  KFVS12

  • Jennifer Fornkohl opened her consignment shop PennyWise Boutique in March 2025 at 1233 Old Cape Road in Jackson, next to Dents Makes Cents + expanded into a neighboring space to add Hair Works Salon while she will extend hours later this spring and celebrate her one-year anniversary in March.  The Cash-Book Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at SEMO's Cape campus reported icy walkways and safety risks after classes resumed Tuesday, Jan. 28 following a weekend ice storm (one student nearly slipped multiple times), while university officials said crews are addressing hazardous conditions.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alliance water crews have worked around the clock to fix several water main breaks amid freezing conditions, logging over 225 overtime hours to maintain service in Cape Girardeau. Their repairs support essential facilities — including hospitals — and help prevent boil water advisories from affecting the community.  KFVS12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since Sunday, Jan. 25, firefighters in Cape Girardeau responded to multiple house and vehicle fires in freezing weather. Fire Marshal Drew St. John urged residents to follow space heater safety rules to prevent fire risks.  KFVS12
  • Cape Girardeau Police announced that registration is now open for the Shield of Armor Wellness Conference — a seminar helping first responders and families learn to spot stress, anxiety and depression — to be held at Century Casino & Hotel on April 27-28.  KFVS12
