EDUCATION NEWS

  • Halley Russell, a junior high assistant principal at Cape Girardeau Public Schools, was surprised with the Missouri Assistant Principal of the Year award on Friday, Jan. 30. She will join assistant principals nationwide for recognition in Washington, D.C. in April.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. John Voss presented a resolution honoring the 100th anniversary of Highway 61 — known as the Blues Highway — at the VisitCape offices on Friday, Jan. 30. Community leaders will celebrate the centennial with events scheduled throughout the year.  KFVS12
  • Travelers without a Real ID will face a $45 fee for TSA’s Confirm ID process starting Sunday at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport (online verification gives a temporary 10-day pass), so updating identification is advised to avoid delays.  KFVS12
  • Portageville Fire + Rescue thanked local crews and community partners for restoring the water system after cold weather caused outages, noting that crews worked extended hours and received donated water from New Madrid officials and local businesses.  Fox 23
  • Road crews in McCracken County are clearing snow today and Thursday from medians and turn lanes, and drivers are advised to expect slowdowns in affected areas. MoDOT will begin upgrading Route 61 traffic signals and adding pedestrian crossings in Jackson in April, with work scheduled to finish by December.  Fox 23
