- ➤ The Southeast Missouri Food Bank launches its You CAN Fight Hunger Campaign during Canned Food Month to restock local pantry shelves. Donors may drop off canned vegetables, fruits, soups, and proteins at participating sites including the Cape Girardeau Public Library and Focus Bank locations (with additional sites across the region). CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A mural celebrating 100 years of the Blues Highway is underway at Painted Wren Art Gallery where anyone of any age can join from Tuesday to Saturday 1-6 p.m.; local artists Barb Bailey + Aaron Horrell are guiding the project, which will finish by mid-October and be displayed at VisitCape. - ➤ The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host its annual Children's Arts Festival Friday, Feb. 6 at its gallery on 426 Broadway Street, with works by over 250 students and performances held at Scout Hall on nearby 420 Broadway Street. The free event runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. KFVS12
- ➤ The Old Broadway Theater at 805 Broadway Street is being redeveloped into the Broadway Market as owner Brennan Todt works on phase two to revive the historic community hub in downtown Cape Girardeau; interested vendors may join the project, which is expected to finish in about one year. Fox 23
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cape Girardeau Public Schools announced that Tyler Abernathy will become the new director of the Career and Technology Center effective July 1 — he previously served as assistant director and aims to expand career programs and local partnerships. Fox 23
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Winter storms caused over 500 canceled blood drives nationwide, including 54 in our region, worsening an ongoing blood shortage and delaying deliveries to local hospitals. The Red Cross urges donors to schedule appointments and receive a ($20 gift card) for donations from Jan. 26 to Feb. 28. Fox 23
- ➤ Connections Memory Cafe — a partnership between Aging Matters and the Alzheimer’s Association — will hold monthly gatherings every 2nd Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Aging Matters on Doctors Park to support those living with dementia and their caregivers in Cape Girardeau. KFVS12
- ➤ Mercy Health Foundation will host a wine and chocolate pairing event on Friday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at Cape Girardeau Country Club (250 Country Club Drive) to fund AEDs for local nonprofits through its HeartStrong Fund. The event features live music, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. KFVS12
