COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Churches and community groups are hosting fish fries across southeast Missouri in the coming weeks; Maple United Methodist Church (Feb. 27) joins Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent Parish events with meals priced from $12 to $18.  Fox 23
  • The Cape Riverfront Market will hold its annual vendor meeting in five days to prepare for a busy season. The session is open to new and returning vendors — who can learn vendor expectations and Demo Tent details for the upcoming season.  Fox 23
  • The SEMO Food Bank report released Tuesday shows the organization distributed over 14 million lbs of food in 2025 + provided 12.34 million meals in southeast Missouri. It also served 5,600 seniors, supported 1,110 students, and ran mobile pantries with help from over 4,500 volunteers + tallied 11,370 hours.  KFVS12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Community leaders in Cape Girardeau remembered civil rights leader Jesse Jackson following his passing, noting his role in securing freedom and equality worldwide (including negotiating hostage releases overseas). Local voices stressed his humility and enduring influence on social justice.  KFVS12
  • Community members can sample signature dishes at the annual Restaurant Hop on Tuesday, March 24, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at local restaurants; tickets cost $15 and proceeds support the SEMO Conservatory of Theatre and Dance to fund a Senior Showcase in New York City.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Notre Dame Regional High School is hosting its Blue & White Gala on March 14 (5 to 11 p.m.) at the Drury Plaza Hotel Convention Center. Presented by Saint Francis Healthcare System, the event will include dinner, dancing, live music, auctions and activities celebrating 100 years of Catholic education.  Fox 23
  • The Jackson R-2 School Board approved turf specifications for the Jackson Indian Baseball Stadium on Feb. 12 (for baseball and softball teams) and moved the plan to competitive bids. If approved in March, construction will start after the season in May.  The Cash-Book Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau City Council discussed redeveloping the former Sears Grand building on Siemers Drive on Tuesday evening as developers proposed adding retail space that could finish by early next year. The project will be voted on in two weeks and operations could begin in fall 2027.  KFVS12
  • Cape Girardeau County Emergency Management is asking local residents to volunteer for the Red Cross Disaster Action Team training that will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Emergency Operations Center at 3555 Veterans Memorial Drive — lunch will be provided and advance online registration is required.  Fox 23
