COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cape Warming Center is seeking volunteers as colder temperatures approach starting Saturday; the center needs help with operations and meal train coverage for Sunday and Tuesday breakfasts (sign up online) if the low temperatures persist.  Fox 23
  • Kaskaskia Eagle Fest will take place on March 7 at the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam (4800 Lock and Dam Road) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event offers eagle viewing, live animal programs, lock tours and vendor booths for families.  Fox 23
  • Uptown Jackson is accepting banner applications for its Hometown Heroes program honoring active-duty members and veterans; applications run Jan. 1 through March 1 and banners will be displayed from Memorial Day through Veterans Day to recognize community heroes at $100 per banner.  Fox 23

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SEMO graduate Sam Schneider built Inland Cape Rice Company from a family farm experiment into a growing business working with 20 to 30 local producers and shipping rice worldwide. The company has expanded operations with a new mill for rice flour to serve gluten-free food manufacturers and specialty markets.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Rivers College named longtime baseball coach Stacey Burkey as its 2026 Raider of the Year. He will be honored at Raider Reunion on Saturday, Feb. 21 at halftime of the Raiders basketball game at the Libla Family Sports Complex, which starts at 4 p.m.  Fox 23
  • At the New Madrid Historical Museum, Jeff Grunwald explained that our bedrock near the Reelfoot Rift can cause earthquakes felt at magnitudes of 3.0 or higher, with over 300 quakes recorded in 2025. He advised residents to keep a two-week supply kit ready in case a major quake occurs.  KFVS12

  • U.S. Rep. Jason Smith visited Perryville High School this week to assess tornado damage and meet students now in temporary classrooms. He pledged to support rebuilding efforts + highlighted the community's resilience during recovery.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Parks and Recreation Department says locals may attend the free 2026 Health & Wellness Expo at the Osage Centre on March 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where they will enjoy cooking and fitness demos, food samples, and health screenings.  KFVS12

  • Crews demolished the Pear Tree Inn off William Street yesterday + city officials are reviewing plans for the now-vacant site.  KFVS12
