COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau will host its 100+ Women Who Care giving event at Deerfield Lodge on Thursday, March 26, 7 p.m. The fundraiser will have over 100 women each contributing $100 to support nonprofits It Takes a Village and Street Level.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau Police Department is now accepting applications for its free Citizens Police Academy, which offers residents aged 18 and older insights into law enforcement operations. The academy meets every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. from April through May, with applications available at the police front desk or by email.  Fox 23
  • A puppy rescued from a vehicle fire last month is available for adoption at Southeast Missouri Pets, 180 Weston St. Applications are open today as shelter officials plan to place Ember in a new home this weekend (the dog received emergency care and visited his rescuers).  Fox 23

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reports that Missouri gas prices have increased as refineries switch to summer-blend fuel today — the state average is $2.64 per gallon, up 13 cents from last week but still 20 cents lower than last year.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • 15-year-old Trysten Weinhold received the Civil Air Patrol’s Billy Mitchell award for his discipline and dedication in a youth leadership program — his family and instructors celebrated his milestone.  KFVS12
  • Oran R-III Superintendent Dr. Adam Friga said school officials responded to a reported verbal threat at the middle school today and found no credible danger; staff are following district procedures while respecting student confidentiality.  Fox 23
  • About 60 high school students gathered today at the Career and Technology Center for Camp Enterprise, where the Jackson Rotary Club hosted a day-long seminar teaching business basics through computer simulations. Teams worked on business ideas and digital presentations, and top teams received $500 scholarships.  The Cash-Book Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau firefighters trained with a controlled house fire on Thursday, Feb. 26 at a home on South Kingshighway (near the Silver Springs Road exit). The training did not impact traffic.  KFVS12
  • Crews will resume maintenance on the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge next Monday, March 2, as part of ongoing upkeep to address future issues. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and drivers should expect merge points for safety (Kevin Plott said).  KFVS12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Saputo Cheese USA is recalling select Great Value cottage cheese due to pasteurization concerns. The products were sold at Walmart in the region from Feb 17 to Feb 20, no illnesses were reported, and consumers should discard them or return the items for a refund (call 1-888-587-2423).  Fox 23

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau is upgrading Shawnee Park Sports Complex with new turf fields and expanded tournament space that will open this spring. The project adds five new fields plus improved bleachers, lighting and parking to attract teams and boost local sports tourism.  Fox 23
