  • The Cape Girardeau Noon Lions Club will host its 88th annual Pancake Day on March 18 at the A.C. Brase Arena Building, offering pancakes and sausage from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for $10 per ticket while accepting donated eyeglasses for free admission.  Fox 23

  • Jackson restaurant owners have closed their doors due to a gas line repair, and the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce will soon launch a +shop local+ campaign to support them amid revenue and payroll challenges. Utility crews expect repairs to take another week as businesses prepare to reopen.  Fox 23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rock musician Ted Nugent will perform at 7 p.m. May 22 at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff as part of Sawyer Smith's Justice Jam. Tickets go on sale March 9 at 10 a.m. online or at the venue (fans from across the region are expected to attend).  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Deputies from the county sheriff’s office visited Community Day School this week as part of Read Across America Week — reading with students and discussing the importance of literacy.  Fox 23
  • Jackson R-2 School District kept classes and meal services running as scheduled despite a natural gas outage affecting several school buildings in Jackson, Fruitland and Gordonville (officials swiftly adapted menus and safety protocols to keep services on track), and families can call 573-243-9501.  Fox 23
  • High school students from southeast Missouri competed yesterday at the Jackson Civic Center in the Job Olympics (a competition testing real-world skills such as stocking shelves, sorting laundry and cleaning facilities) while local teachers, community members and business leaders timed and evaluated their performance.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Cape Girardeau lifted its precautionary boil water advisory Friday after tests confirmed the water is safe following a storm-related power outage at the local treatment facility — residents can resume normal use and sign up for alerts on the City website.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Red Cross reminds Cape Girardeau residents to test and replace batteries in smoke alarms before daylight saving time begins tomorrow (Sunday, Mar. 8) to cut fire risks. It also advises families to plan a two-minute escape route.  Fox 23
