  • SEMO Prom Mothers of Cape Presbyterian Church from Becca’s Closet are giving free prom dresses to help families in need as prom season nears — volunteer Karen Retter said the chapter has given away 128 homecoming dresses, 74 winter ball dresses, and 60 prom dresses, and donations can be dropped off at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Perryville Road.  KFVS12
  • The Cape Aquatic Center will reopen to the public Monday, March 31 after extra maintenance work, and visitors can resume regular swimming routines—staff worked to ensure the facility is safe.  Fox 23

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities in Caruthersville said a post on local Facebook yard sale pages falsely claimed a silver alert by listing a 27-year-old in the wrong uniform—red flags include missing law enforcement details and incorrect age guidelines, so residents should call 573-333-0216 or 573-333-2121 with concerns.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Jackson R-2 School District has introduced IGNITE, a new career-based learning program at Jackson High School that will offer thirty juniors and seniors real-world experience; students interested in health care will gain clinical experience through a partnership with Saint Francis Healthcare System plus those pursuing education will work alongside current teachers.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau voters will decide on renewing the city’s half-cent sales tax that funds road repairs on April 8. Mayor Stacy Kinder said the Transportation Trust Fund has funded street maintenance for 30 years—residents are encouraged to review past and planned projects.  Fox 23
  • A bill by local Sen. Jamie Burger will require Missouri schools to hang posters of the Ten Commandments in every classroom and lobby on a poster no smaller than 11 by 14 inches—if passed, the rule will take effect on January 1 and be funded by donors. High school student Calvino Hammerman and local clergy said the bill could force religion on students, and the Senate Education Committee is expected to vote soon.  KFVS12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cape ENT Group, a Saint Francis Healthcare System partner, will offer free head and neck cancer screenings on April 21st from 8 a.m. to noon and on April 22nd from 1 to 4 p.m. at Saint Francis Medical Center, Entrance 8 Suite 420 + health officials note that six percent of new U.S. cancers involve the head and neck with over 70 percent of oropharyngeal cancers caused by HPV.  Fox 23
