  • Old Town Cape, Inc. honored community volunteers, local businesses and individuals at its annual dinner 'Reflections of Success' in downtown Cape Girardeau. The event recognized nine award recipients and highlighted 2024 achievements with 21 new businesses, 112 new jobs and over $8.1 million invested downtown.  Fox 23

CRIME NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau police are investigating a shots fired incident near William Street and Henderson Ave — no injuries were reported though some property was damaged as officers search for a suspect.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southeast Missouri State University’s organismal ecology degree program helps students gain skills for jobs in wildlife conservation, environmental science, healthcare and museum curation. Dr. Jason Henry said the campus near the Mississippi River (and nearby wetland ecosystems and Ozark Forest) offers hands-on field research and internship opportunities.  Fox 23

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Butler County residents who survived two tornadoes this month are preparing for more severe storms and the chance of Black River flooding starting today and lasting into the weekend — safety remains the top concern as emergency management director Jeff Shawan urged residents to plan safe shelter and secure damaged properties when heavy winds and rain hit.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cape Girardeau Police Department honored a flag from the 1140th Engineer Battalion, which flew on September 11 before being presented yesterday—patrolman Matt Tisher said it reminds officers daily of the sacrifices made by first responders.  Fox 23
  • The Missouri Department of Conservation was named the 2024 Agency of the Year by the National Deer Association for its innovative deer management techniques and public input efforts. The award recognized its Deer Management Assistance Program and collaborative improvements to its 10-Year White-tailed Deer Management Plan.  Fox 23
  • The New Madrid County Clerk’s Office said that starting April 8, Ward 2 voters in Portageville will vote at the Community Center on 105 E. Main Street instead of the Rogers Red Building in Meatte Park. The change will merge these voters with the LeSieur-1 and Portage-1 precincts for the municipal election.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mercy Southeast has expanded its surgical care team by adding five surgeons and two nurse practitioners to improve patient care in Southeast Missouri. The new team members come from Cape Girardeau Surgical Clinic and include surgeons Kevin Bartow, Ray Silliman, Major Burger, Carson Cunningham, and Joseph McCadams as well as nurse practitioners April Ostendorf-Morris and Stephanie Moll.  Fox 23
