  • Katy O’Ferrell’s Irish Pub and Restaurant announced the death of co-founder Mark William Dirnberger, whose kindness and hard work shaped the business (he was a grandfather, father, husband, and friend). Funeral plans were not yet released, and the restaurant thanked the community for its support.  Fox 23

  • The Better Business Bureau warns local used car buyers to expect high prices and low inventory while urging careful research and inspections to avoid scams; the agency reported nearly 19,000 complaints last year.  Fox 23

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Missouri will waive state sales tax on select ENERGY STAR appliances from April 19 to April 25 as part of the Show Me Green Tax Holiday, letting Cape Girardeau shoppers save on washers, dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, and refrigerators with purchases up to $1,500.  KFVS12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Flood + Drought app is now available to track real-time water levels using statewide sensor data, helping locals stay alert to flood and drought conditions. The free tool can be downloaded or accessed on desktop via the Missouri Hydrology Information Center website.  Fox 23
  • Warmer weather has locals enjoying the outdoors and learning to identify venomous snakes. The Missouri Department of Conservation advises checking pupil shape and pattern; Dr. Colleen Retz (veterinarian) explained that Copperheads are often mistaken for nonvenomous baby Ratsnakes.  KFVS12

  • In Gordonville, the Cape Girardeau Dive Team and Gordonville Fire Protection District completed a water rescue drill at Enclave Lake Estates on Tuesday. The teams practiced coordination (a critical training exercise) to better respond to emergencies.  KFVS12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cape ENT Group at 150 S. Mount Auburn Rd. advises local allergy sufferers to ease symptoms by limiting exposure and using over the counter options such as Claritin, Zyrtec and nasal sprays. Nurse practitioner Erica Rouse recommends allergy testing if daily measures do not suffice— a step toward personalized treatment.  KFVS12
  • Rural Health, Inc. today offers Medication-Assisted Treatment for opioid use disorder at five clinics in southern Illinois where residents can receive a mix of medication and therapy. Psychiatric nurse practitioner Erica Vining said the program can cut the risk of overdose death by 70 percent.  KFVS12
  • Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office warns residents that fentanyl test strips (which may give a false sense of security) are not reliable when testing counterfeit street drugs like fake pills. The office advises parents to talk with their children about these risks.  Fox 23
