  • Old Town Cape’s Design Committee is hosting a Spring Litter Pick-Up event on April 22 at 12 p.m. (Market Lot, 35 S Spanish Street) to prepare Downtown Cape for upcoming outdoor events.  Fox 23

CRIME NEWS

  • Drake O'Neil Nelson (30) of Doniphan was arrested by Doniphan City Police on a Class D felony charge for possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor charge for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and charges for failure to register his motor vehicle and no insurance.  Fox 23
  • A 29-year-old Cape Girardeau man, Connor Fanger, was arrested on April 9 for trafficking second-degree and controlled substance delivery charges after a police K-9—Nerro—sniffed out 81 grams of suspected drugs during a traffic stop on Broadway Street, with his bond set at $40,000.  KFVS12
  • On April 9 around 3:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Broadway, Cape Girardeau officers stopped a vehicle and arrested Connor Fanger after a police dog Nerro alerted to 81 grams of suspected methamphetamine, cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms, prescription pills and drug paraphernalia as he faces charges for Class C Felony Trafficking Second Degree and Class C Felony Delivery of a Controlled Substance with a bond set at $40,000 while remaining presumed innocent until proven guilty.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thirty-one SEMO students earned their storm spotter certification on March 3 and applied their training during the March 14 storms. Their training covered cloud formations, wind patterns, and storm development—skills that support their careers in aviation and geoscience.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction crews will begin a maintenance project on Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge on April 28 as the bridge is restricted to one lane with a 12-foot width limit across the Mississippi River between Cape Girardeau and Alexander County. Officials say the project will finish by November 1 but weather may delay completion.  KFVS12
  • Today, the Cape Girardeau Police Department welcomed DJ Daniel, 13, as an honorary officer for his brave fight against cancer and his dream to serve the community. He has been sworn in by over 1,100 agencies and will throw out the first pitch at the St. Louis Cardinals game tonight (a moment that honors his strength).  Fox 23
  • In the April 8 general municipal election, Mark Unger won the Jackson Ward 2 alderman seat by one vote with 92 votes against incumbent Dave Hitt’s 91 after a hand count on Friday. Voters also approved measures to raise funds for fire equipment, renew the city’s sales tax for street repairs, continue the library tax, and support a school bond for facility upgrades—they also adopted new rules for village elections and re-elected three public health trustees.  The Cash-Book Journal
  • Starting April 28, crews will work on the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge and reduce it to one lane with a 12-foot width limit until the work is done by November 1. The project connects Cape Girardeau with Alexander County, Illinois and may face delays from weather.  Fox 23

  • Saint Francis Healthcare System welcomes Derrik C. Abell, PA-C, as a new provider at Cape Diabetes and Endocrinology (211 Saint Francis Drive, Entrance 7, Third Floor). Abell, who graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 2020, is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.  Fox 23
