- ➤ The fifth annual LemonDrop Long Drive event took place on April 12 at The TeeHouse Complex in Cape Girardeau and raised over $27,000 in seven months of planning to fund care packages and teach about testicular cancer. The event had 38 sponsors and featured both community leaders and the public competing in a long drive contest—where the farthest shot reached 343 yards. Fox 23
- ➤ 13-year-old DJ Daniel—the brave child battling terminal brain cancer—was sworn in as a police officer by over 1,100 agencies, including Cape Girardeau, and he also swore in nine other children fighting cancer. He received department gear and left a lasting message to those who struggle with illness. Fox 23
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A large police presence was seen at a Burfordville home on April 16 when police executed a search warrant and four vehicles arrived around 7:30 a.m.—three people, including two women and one man, were taken in handcuffs as details will follow later. KFVS12
- ➤ On Wednesday, a joint operation by the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force—Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office raided a home in Burfordville and seized firearms, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia while taking one man and two women into custody at about 6:45 a.m. as authorities hold them pending formal charges. - ➤ Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau will launch a new Bachelor of Science in game development this fall; the program teaches game design, computer science, and hands-on skills (like rapid game prototyping, game theory and mixed reality development) and offers eligible students a tuition award (the Will To Do Award). - ➤ Governor Kehoe announced that FEMA will join local officials for joint preliminary damage assessments of public infrastructure in 25 Missouri counties including Cape Girardeau after severe storms and flooding that began March 30.
