COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kenny Rogers Children’s Center will host its annual 'Kow Pasture Klassic' fundraiser on Saturday at Schindler’s Tavern in New Hamburg. The event features a golf-style game with tennis balls and improvised clubs, food & drinks, and a silent auction open to both players and spectators.  Fox 23
  • Green Bear Project will host its fifth annual child abuse prevention event on April 25 at Cape County Park South. The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and offers educational activities for families by local groups (such as the library and Girl Scouts).  Fox 23
  • Jackson's annual Park Day clean-up event is set for Saturday, April 25 when volunteers meet at Pavilion No. 1 at 9 a.m.—T-shirts and refreshments will be provided for participants of all ages.  Fox 23

BUSINESS NEWS

  • River Radio announced that general manager Mike Renick (26 years of service, including six as GM) will step down; he praised the impact of local media while the company works to name his successor.  Fox 23

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Historic Preservation Commission will host a free walking tour and presentation at Old Lorimier Cemetery (established 1808) on May 4 at 5:30 p.m. to highlight notable figures and educate the community about local history.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southeast Missouri State University will host its first Game Jam event April 24-26 at Dempster Hall, where students and aspiring developers will create video games and showcase their work with prizes on Sunday (registration is free).  Fox 23
  • Three Rivers College has opened a new greenhouse for its agriculture program to offer hands-on learning and support local community projects, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by students, faculty and community members in Poplar Bluff.  Fox 23
  • After Malden R-1 cut its band program due to an $800,000 shortfall, students rallied with a petition and support from local artists; the district announced a Monday band program in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club to offer music opportunities next school year.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau County ordered the U.S. and Missouri flags to be flown at half-staff to honor former Commissioner J. Ronald (Judge) Fischer, who served from 1968 to 1988. The order, issued on April 20, remains in effect through dusk on April 24.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • SEMO MS Community will hold a Walk for a Cure on Saturday, Apr. 25 at 9 a.m. at Capaha Park Shelter #1 in Cape Girardeau — the event includes a symbolic lap around Capaha Pond with games, snacks and a raffle to fund multiple sclerosis research.  KFVS12
