COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers from various organizations joined Old Town Cape on Earth Day to clean up downtown Cape Girardeau ahead of the upcoming Riverfront Market. The cleanup focused on removing trash (cigarette butts, glass, and other debris) to help maintain a cleaner community.  KFVS12
  • A Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony will be held on May 14 at Cape Bible Chapel to honor officers who died in the line of duty—coffee and donuts will be served at 9 a.m. ahead of the 10 a.m. start, and the event is open to the public.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau businesses will donate part of their profits to Easterseals Midwest for Take Action for Autism Weekend from April 24 to 26. Donating businesses include Acees Food and Fuel + Mana Tea + Roni’s Mac Bar + Texas Roadhouse, supporting family resources like employment training and skills programs.  KFVS12
  • Regional Walmart stores donated $8,500 via its Spark Good program to the Southeast Missouri Food Bank to support food assistance for families, children and seniors in southeastern Missouri, with stores in Cape Girardeau + others including Farmington, Jackson, Kennett, Malden, Perryville, Poplar Bluff and Sikeston.  Fox 23
  • The Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Missouri moved into a new remodeled building on Independence Street last month and now offers more space for games like basketball, ping pong (and air hockey) while preparing for their grand opening on Thursday, June 4.  KFVS12
  • Country music star Jason Aldean headlined the 8th annual Food Bank Benefit Concert at the University of Arkansas-East Arkansas Community College, +raising $170,000 to support nearly 700,000 meals+ for families facing food insecurity across Arkansas and Missouri.  KFVS12
  • A Missouri Lottery player won $100K with a Mystery Prize Crossword ticket bought at Discount Smoke Shop on the 300 block of Sprigg Street; the winner claimed the prize on April 3 (Lottery office in St. Louis).  KFVS12

  • Stephanie Letner of the Cash-Book Journal was named 2026 Dee Hamilton Memorial Sales Pro of the Year last Thursday in Jefferson City — the award honors her dedication to local businesses and her long career since 2009.  The Cash-Book Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southeast Missouri State University’s Holland College of Arts and Media will host a 20th-anniversary arts event on May 1 at the River Campus ARX Building (5:30 to 7 p.m.), featuring live demonstrations, student artwork, interactive activities, music, refreshments, and $50 tickets.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SEMPO and CGCTA are asking residents for input on a 12-month study to extend fixed route bus service from Cape Girardeau to Jackson plus Nash Road. The study by firm Olsson will guide transit expansion options with follow-up outreach planned in the fall.  The Cash-Book Journal
  • Crews will close KY 1943 in Lyon County Friday, April 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a bridge inspection and replace a culvert on Route H in Bollinger County Monday, April 27 and on Route Y in Perry County Monday, May 4; drivers should use detours.  Fox 23

  • Mercy Hospital Southeast in Cape Girardeau was named to Newsweek's list of America's Best Maternity Hospitals for 2026 based on patient care and quality metrics. The recognition underscores its commitment to comprehensive maternal and newborn services.  Fox 23
  • The Community Counseling Center will host a series of free mental health training sessions in May in Cape Girardeau, Marble Hill, Ste. Genevieve, Fredericktown and Perryville to help participants spot and respond to mental health and substance use warning signs - participants must complete about two hours of pre-work before attending.  Fox 23
