COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau Fire Department will light fire stations red today in the annual Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters campaign — a tribute to firefighters who died in the line of duty.  Fox 23
  • The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce will host the upcoming First Friday Coffee event focused on workforce development and talent initiatives with groups including Community Partnership of Southeast Missouri, Adult & Teen Challenge Mid-America, MERS Missouri Goodwill Industries, and Jobs for America’s Graduates. Southeast Missouri State University President Dr. Hodson will award a certificate of appreciation to local businesses (celebrating Cape Girardeau’s recognition by USA Today as a top college town).  Fox 23
  • Students from Carrier Mills grade school donated 2,705 items to Heavens Kitchen food pantry, which serves over 100 families each week, as part of a partnership with JMAG corporation that also awarded the winning classroom a pizza party during reading week.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau native Patricia Washington will receive the Excellence in Investigative Journalism and Civic Accountability Award at the NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner on June 6 at the St. Louis Airport Marriott Hotel. Proceeds will support civil rights scholarships and community programs.  Fox 23
  • Seniors And Lawmen Together will host a law enforcement memorial ceremony on May 14 at Cape Bible Chapel; coffee+donuts will be served from 9 a.m., and the event is open to the public to honor fallen officers.  Fox 23

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Residents along Terrie Hill Road saw storm damage when lightning struck a large tree Monday morning, blocking the road with debris and branches + crews are working to remove the tree from the roadway.  Fox 23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Old Town Cape announced the Tunes at Twilight 2026 Spring and Fall Series with six free concerts at Ivers Square, starting May 8 and continuing through Sept. 11. The series includes weekly food vendors + face painting and a designated rain-out site at Gospel Life Church.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Central High School has implemented a phone-free school day using the Yondr program to boost student focus and engagement; Principal Drew Church said students secure their phones in the morning (Yondr is used by over three million students worldwide).  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A KYTC contractor will restrict lanes along U.S. 68 near Aurora for asphalt resurfacing beginning Wednesday, Apr. 29, with work lasting about two weeks weather permitting; crews will also reduce Route 67 to one lane in Greenville from May 4 to May 15 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.  Fox 23
