COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers cleaned a block between Jefferson and Sprigg streets in downtown Cape Girardeau under the guidance of Dr. Melissa Stickel — who organized the effort with YouthBuild students — to revitalize the area for future families. The cleanup is part of a larger plan that includes remodeling homes and making neighborhoods safer.  Fox 23

CRIME NEWS

  • A Missouri conservation agent was hurt by dogs at Iron Mountain Lake on April 24—after contacting Janet Shy and her daughter Megan Stroup about safety equipment, the dogs attacked when Shy tried to pull the agent away, leading to arrests of Shy, Stroup, and dog owner Susan Adams on outstanding warrants and charges of assault on a special victim and resisting arrest.  Fox 23
  • Three people were seriously injured in a shooting early Friday morning near Lee and Vine Streets in the 300 block of Oliver Street—officers from Charleston DPS and the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office responded and the motive is under investigation.  Fox 23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dr. Joel Rhodes, a SEMO professor, has been named executive director of the State Historical Society of Missouri—his appointment was announced by Sen. Roy Blunt, and Rhodes replaces Gary Kremer who retires in November. Rhodes, who has written seven books and hosts Telling History on KRCU Public Radio, brings extensive experience in Missouri history to the role.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shawnee Community College Trustee James Darden died and was known for his work in the college’s Adult Education Department—he faced serious health challenges and helped many transform their lives. Visitation is today from 4—7 p.m. at Grange Hall Free Will Baptist Church in Marion with funeral services to follow at 7 p.m.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ameren Missouri reminds residents with past-due utility bills that help is available through programs like LIHEAP and the Energy Crisis Intervention Program — the LIHEAP deadline is May 31. Those needing extra assistance with heating or cooling bills are advised to contact local partners such as the East Missouri Action Agency.  KFVS12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Southeast Missouri Pets will partner with the American Red Cross to host a community blood drive on May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 180 Weston St. Donors will be able to schedule appointments by calling (573-334-5837) and will be encouraged to donate (O negative, A negative and B negative) blood to support ongoing needs.  Fox 23
  • Saint Francis Healthcare System will offer free skin cancer screenings on May 10 in cooperation with the American Academy of Dermatology’s SPOT me screening program at Cape Radiation Oncology from 8 a.m. to noon—appointments are required by calling 573-331-5784.  Fox 23
