  • Retired schoolteacher Susie L. faces a financial challenge after an EF3 tornado damaged her home, leaving her with a $14,400 emergency bill and only $6,000 from her insurance — a GoFundMe has been launched to cover the shortfall so she can save her home.  Fox 23
  • Local letter carriers will collect food donations for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 10—residents should drop nonperishable items near their mailboxes by 8 a.m. The drive will gather needed foods like canned fruits, vegetables, soups and proteins to support the Southeast Missouri Food Bank.  Fox 23

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Cape Girardeau County Coroner Wavis Jordan received four years probation — he provided false information on three death certificates and stole money from a dead man’s wallet, and he must pay a $250 fine and $20 in restitution.  KFVS12

  • Southeast Missouri State University announced its 2024-2025 Student Life and Leadership Awards to recognize students, faculty and staff for leadership, integrity and community engagement. The university honored winners in categories including president’s spirit of southeast award, first year student award, civic and global engagement award, student life achievement award, university contributor award, outstanding student organization and advisor award, provost award and experiential learning award — a range that highlights diverse campus achievements.  Fox 23
  • Southeast Missouri State University was named a Gold Military Friendly School and a Top Ten Military Spouse Friendly School for the 2025-2026 school year—recognizing its strong support for military families and spouses. The university provides tailored military and veteran services along with personalized academic advising to help students transition to civilian careers.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Motorists face traffic changes as Transportation Trust Fund projects continue this week—Cape Rock Drive reopens April 30 while northbound traffic in Perryville and southbound traffic from Lexington close on April 30 and May 1 respectively. In Stoddard County, Route F will reduce to one lane from May 5—15 for drainage repairs from Route 60 to County Road 468, so drivers should follow posted detours.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • John J. Pershing VA Medical Center is asking for volunteers — especially drivers — to help veterans get to their medical appointments using facility vehicles and supplied fuel. Volunteers in Farmington, Cape Girardeau, West Plains, Paragould and Poplar Bluff can choose their own schedules as the center plans to double its volunteer force.  Fox 23
  • Lutheran Family and Children's Services has reaffirmed its commitment to mental health care during National Mental Health Awareness Month by offering counseling, trauma-informed therapy and support for anxiety and depression. In 2024 the organization provided more than 30,331 service hours to 10,454 children and families and Director Lindsay Jeffries said mental health is vital to overall well being.  Fox 23
