- ➤ Cape Girardeau Public Library will host its Backyard BBQ Kickoff on May 20 from noon to 3 p.m at 711 N. Clark St to celebrate America’s 250th birthday—featuring games, live entertainment, community painting, and free food for families and neighbors. KFVS12
- ➤ The Community Counseling Center held its Community Impact Luncheon today to raise mental health awareness and honor Lisa Steele with the Courage and Recovery Award (she recounted her recovery journey). - ➤ May is beef month in Missouri as Missouri Department of Agriculture director Chris Chinn notes that drought and rising costs have pushed the cattle herd to a 70-year low, boosting beef prices & putting future supply in question. He remains hopeful that herds will rebound in a few years. KFVS12
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ SEMO’s respiratory therapy program earned a national credentialing award — the Distinguished Registered Respiratory Therapist Credentialing Success Award — for helping graduates reach a 90% pass rate on certification exams. Recipients will be honored in a ceremony in July. Fox 23
- ➤ Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) was named one of the top five small-town universities by USA Today. Officials announced the honor at the First Friday Coffee event, highlighting the school’s robust academics and close community feel. Fox 23
- ➤ Students at Richland R-1 Public Schools took part in a crash simulation this week to show the risks of unsafe driving before prom and graduation (supported by several emergency services) so they can learn to celebrate safely. Fox 23
- ➤ East Prairie R-II School District has partnered with Southeast Missouri State University through the SEMO Educators Advantage Program to offer faculty and staff tuition discounts for online courses and professional development. - ➤ Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced that a $7.4B settlement with Purdue Pharma has taken effect — directing more than $91M into local addiction treatment and recovery programs. The deal bars the Sackler family from selling opioids and transfers Purdue’s manufacturing to Knoa Pharma LLC under strict oversight. Fox 23

- ➤ The Jackson Police Department recognizes May as Mental Health Awareness Month & encourages community members to speak openly about mental health challenges and seek help from available resources.
