People dodged showers at a block party on Ivers Square in downtown Cape Girardeau on May 3 sponsored by Gateway Community Church.

The event offered health screenings, food, games and prizes while most of the rain stayed away.

Runners, families, and visitors crowded downtown Cape Girardeau on Saturday morning during the annual Muddy River Marathon, which boosted local restaurants and shops while easing concerns about downtown safety—local business owners noted the event increased both immediate customer flow and long-term community interest. The race proved a growing economic asset that brought energy and a fresh outlook to the area.

Local volunteers at Christian Boxing Academy hosted a session for a dozen teens on Saturday afternoon where they learned to make better life choices through practical simulations and community talks—offering guidance to avoid negative outcomes.

The program will meet quarterly to help more teens learn from these local role models.

Results for the 2025 Muddy River Marathon in Cape Girardeau are now coming in after the race started at 6 a.m. on May 3 — Jeremiah Gibbons was the first to finish the full course while Benjamin Schnurbusch led the half-marathon.
