CULTURE NEWS

  • VisitCape launched its Tunes at Twilight concert series this week and the first outdoor concert is set for 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ivers Square (attendees are encouraged to bring blankets to enjoy a spring tradition).  Fox 23

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Missouri have risen to an average of $4.16 per gallon for regular fuel, up 33 cents from last week. AAA Missouri (via Weekend Gas Watch) noted that rising crude oil prices and seasonal demand are pushing costs higher ahead of Memorial Day weekend.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau Noon Optimist Club awarded eight graduating seniors $1,000 scholarships on May 6 as part of its Steve Wright Scholarships program to honor academic achievement and leadership, and the club said the awards support young community members.  Fox 23
  • The University School for Young Children at SEMO has been reaccredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, confirming its commitment to high-quality early education for local families and offering SEMO students hands-on training opportunities. It is the only accredited early childhood provider between St. Louis and Nashville.  KFVS12
  • Teachers, school staff, and other education workers gathered last Thursday at AC Brase Arena for a free appreciation event hosted by River Radio and EBO MD. The event featured food, drinks, and a $500 classroom supply giveaway (sponsored by EBO MD) and organizers plan to expand it next year.  Fox 23

  • Missouri officials requested federal help from FEMA to assess storm damage after severe weather hit 11 counties from April 23 to April 28. Officials will review public and joint assessments to decide if residents + local governments qualify for upcoming federal disaster aid.  Fox 23
  • Ameren Missouri reminds customers to apply for energy assistance programs that help cover heating or cooling bills by May 31 through the Missouri Department of Social Services (MDSS). The company partners with local agencies (for example, East Missouri Action Agency) to guide eligible households.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mercy Hospital Southeast recognized nurse Ashley Hoague with the DAISY Award for exceptional patient care during National Nurses Week + a family nominee praised her compassionate support in the cardiothoracic ICU.  Fox 23
  • Regenesis Spine and Joint, formerly Jackson Healing Arts Integrated Medical Center, now focuses on spine and joint care and non-surgical treatments while planning a patient open house in summer; the clinic will keep its staff and location and expand with a Festus satellite.  Fox 23
