COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Law enforcement agencies and community members gathered Thursday for the annual SALT Law Enforcement Memorial to honor local officers killed in the line of duty — the event included personnel from Jackson Police Department, Cape Girardeau Police Department, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol along with family members of the fallen.  Fox 23
  • A mobile dog adoption event will be held May 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at AG Jones at Home and Roost Home Design Marketplace, 39 N. Broadview St., where Southeast Missouri Pets— a local nonprofit caring for 3,000 animals each year— will offer adoptions with a special $100 fee for dogs four months and older. Jenn Farmer, the nonprofit's executive director, says the event will help find loving homes for pets and free up shelter space.  Fox 23

  • Pope Leo XIV — the first American pope from Chicago — was elected on May 8 after white smoke appeared from the Sistine Chapel chimney and triggered cheers at Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delta School District is partnering with Southeast Missouri State University to offer its educators a tuition discount for online undergraduate, graduate and paraprofessional courses through the SEMO Educators Advantage program—supporting teacher development and local student success. The program makes professional growth more accessible while strengthening the region’s educational workforce.  Fox 23
  • Students at Notre Dame High School celebrated Wednesday as they watched live coverage from Rome announce Pope Leo XIV—the first American pope—while teachers reported that the white smoke signaled a historic decision that united the school in local pride.  Fox 23
  • After a shooting at Cape Central’s graduation last year, the district has added new security measures and moved the ceremony to the junior high gym. The graduation will be held on May 16 at 7 p.m. with police and school officers patrolling the campus — guests must pass metal detectors and show their tickets — to keep the event safe and dignified.  KFVS12

  • Since September, the city of Cape Girardeau has been planning a Community Development Block Grant program with HUD and the PORCH Initiative to address housing needs for low income and moderate income residents — details will be shared on FOX23 tonight at 9 p.m.  Fox 23
