COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fresh Start is one of several groups providing free summer meals to children from June to Aug. 9; kids may get breakfast or lunch on a walk-in basis—Shelby Brown on KBSI FOX23 will share more details at 9 p.m.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau County Emergency Management’s Long Term Recovery Committee will organize a volunteer workday on May 17 to help clean up the Delta area—residents can sign up online and monetary donations are welcome for disaster relief.  Fox 23

CRIME NEWS

  • A 27-year-old Cape Girardeau woman was charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm after a fatal shooting on May 9 near Whitener — Louisiana; she appeared in court Monday at 2:29 p.m. following witness reports that she fired a gun during a fight.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau police responded to a shooting on Kenwood Drive on May 11 at 11:45 p.m. where officers found a victim with a gunshot wound to the head in a GMC Yukon and later took Cacey W. Bright into custody after she said she accidentally pulled the trigger while loading a gun—officers executed a search warrant that seized a blue and pink Glock 9mm, ammunition, and photos from her phone.  Fox 23
  • A Cape Girardeau woman, 59-year-old Cacey Bright, is accused of shooting a 21-year-old in the head just before midnight on May 11 and is held on a $1 million cash-only bond while police review phone photos to build a timeline—charges may be amended based on the victim’s health.  KFVS12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An economic study by Lightcast found that Southeast Missouri State University contributed $1.4 billion to the state economy in the 2023-2024 fiscal year—supporting 14,725 jobs and generating 90.2 million dollars in operations spending, 8.7 million dollars from out-of-state visitor spending, 36.1 million dollars in student spending, and 1.3 billion dollars from alumni earnings and business productivity. The study also noted that students earned an average of 6.50 dollars in higher lifetime earnings for every dollar invested while taxpayers received 2.50 dollars in value.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Perryville High School—which is in Perryville—will hold its commencement ceremony on Friday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at Perry Park Center for 208 seniors, including 30 receiving academic honors and nine Summa Cum Laude graduates, with Magna Cum Laude student Ayla Schuler and longtime teacher Don O’Keefe scheduled to speak. The ticketed event is not open to the public.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The county emergency management team will hold a volunteer workday in Delta on May 17 to remove debris left by an early April tornado — the agency is partnering with local groups to collect funds and support disaster relief efforts.  KFVS12
  • The Cape Girardeau Police Department said Patrolman Tisher received the 2025 Sandlot Salute Award from Missouri Bulls Baseball for his community service and leadership. He returned to duty after his military deployment and has served the department for nine and a half years excelling in criminal investigations.  Fox 23
