- ➤ Luke McClellan saved an 8-year-old girl from a burning house in Scott City on April 30, 2025—though a mother and a son lost their lives. He will be honored for his quick actions at Scott City’s City Hall on May 19 at 7:00 p.m. Fox 23

- ➤ The Cape Chamber has launched the Cape Leadership Academy to help managers build leadership skills with training sessions and practical events—applications are accepted until June 15. Fox 23
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Cape Girardeau police responded to a Friday report of shots fired at a Whitener residence and found one person with a non-life-threatening leg wound while 22-year-old Micah Ledbetter was taken to a hospital and later died — 27-year-old Deandra Leeann Patterson was charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm as police said they expected no further arrests. - ➤ Richard McCoy was found guilty of first-degree harassment on May 12 in Cape Girardeau County—he sent a letter to a potential juror during summer 2024 and received a maximum four-year sentence in the Department of Corrections. KFVS12
- ➤ Cacey W. Bright was taken into custody after her daughter suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head in a vehicle on Kenwood Drive at 11:45 p.m. on May 11—Bright said she accidentally discharged her 9mm Glock while loading a magazine and a search warrant later recovered the firearm, ammunition, and a spent shell casing. - ➤ Cape Girardeau police are investigating several thefts reported on May 12, when tools, guttering, a vehicle and HVAC parts were stolen, and on May 13 when a cell phone was taken during a sale exchange (all cases remain under investigation). Fox 23
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Red House Interpretive Center at 128 Aquamsi St. will host Heritage Day on May 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.—the event will display blacksmithing, flint knapping, lace making, wood carving, a black powder gun exhibit, mule jumping and music by Don Hahs to honor early settlers in the old Cape Girardeau district. - ➤ Former U.S. Senator and Missouri Governor Christopher 'Kit' Bond died Tuesday in St. Louis at age 86, as announced by Governor Mike Kehoe. Bond served the state with bipartisan dedication + created the Parents as Teachers program that reached many children. KFVS12
- ➤ Former U.S. Sen. and Missouri Gov. Christopher S. 'Kit' Bond died Monday in St. Louis at 86, Gov. Mike Kehoe announced. Flags will be flown at half-staff at government buildings — funeral arrangements will be announced later. Fox 23
