- ➤ SEM Vets’ annual March to the River begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 24 at Knights of Columbus Hall, offering a free and family-friendly event where veterans & community members will walk about six miles before returning for a celebration with food and music. KFVS12
- ➤ Neighborhood roll calls will resume this summer — giving Cape Girardeau residents a chance to meet local law enforcement in a relaxed setting. The events will be held in various neighborhoods and will let residents ask questions and learn about their officers. Fox 23
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ In Cape Girardeau, Casey Bright, 59, faces amended charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action after the May 11 shooting left the victim dead—he remains in custody on a $1 million cash-only bond. Fox 23
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Missouri Department of Conservation is offering Free Fishing Days on June 7 and 8—no fishing permit is needed during the event. Anglers must follow size and bag limits and check local rules for special permits at some sites. KFVS12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Graves County Highway Maintenance Crew will close a section of KY 564 near the intersection with KY 1124 tomorrow at 8 a.m. to replace a cross drain and finish by 2:30 p.m. Friday, while northbound I-55 in Cape Girardeau will be reduced to one lane for bridge maintenance & pavement repairs from May 23 to July 15, and Routes 25, 72 plus the Chester Bridge will have lane restrictions tomorrow for repairs, weather permitting. - ➤ Third grade and fourth grade students from Immaculate Conception School took a field trip to Jackson City Hall, Cape County Courthouse and the Cape County Sheriff's Department—meeting with a city administrator, three judges and the sheriff to learn about local government and community safety. The event starts at 7:04 a.m. at Mercy Fitness Center — HealthPoint Jackson and offers a 5K run, 5K walk, 1-mile Firecracker run/walk, or virtual option while all proceeds help fund Mercy Children’s Wellness Fund, with registration closing July 1.
