COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau will hold a ribbon cutting for its new Youth Outdoor Sports Complex at Shawnee Park tomorrow from 5 to 5:30 p.m. The facility has five new softball and baseball fields with turf, opened in April, and was funded by a 2018 tax vote (1157 S. West End Blvd).  Fox 23
  • Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri will host its fifth annual Mississippi Mingle on June 6 in downtown Cape Girardeau at Knights Hall — 318 S. Spanish St, featuring barbecue, live music, carnival games, and food trucks, with proceeds supporting local charity programs.  Fox 23
  • The Community Counseling Center is holding the Families Thriving Together Workshop at the Jackson Civic Center on Tuesday, June 23 from 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m. Parents must attend as the session will address teen mental health and social media challenges, and registration is open for up to 50 teens.  KFVS12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cape Con 2026 (comic convention) is set for November 6-8 at the Show Me Center. The event will feature Star Wars voice actors and activities including cosplay contests, maid cafe, and tournament gaming; tickets go on sale at midnight tonight.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • USA Today named Cape Girardeau the fifth-best small college town, and SEMO president (Dr. Brad Hodson) thanked local businesses, organizations, and residents for making the city welcoming to 9,000 students. University leaders will continue partnering with the community to boost economic growth and enhance student experience.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews resurfaced Capaha Trail yesterday as part of an ongoing project plus they will return to fill the dug-out edges and repair one entrance, so the trail remains closed through August.  KFVS12
  • Northbound Interstate 55 in Cape Girardeau County will reduce to one lane with a 10-foot width for Bloomfield Road overpass maintenance (MoDOT) from Tuesday, May 26 to Friday, May 29, with work taking place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. near mile markers 95.4 to 95.6.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Counseling Center will host its second annual Thriving Together Community Behavioral Health and Wellness Conference on July 22 at the Show Me Center — featuring speakers Darryl Strawberry and Bobby Henline. Registration is required for this free one-day event running from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Fox 23

  • Cape Central graduate Adeline Cook was selected as one of the top 100 cheerleaders for the National Cheer Association and will soon travel to Chicago to coach her first camp. She will later attend Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville to further her cheer career.  KFVS12
