COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents can join the 9th annual March to the River on Saturday, May 23 & the fourth annual Remembrance 5K on Memorial Day. Both events will proceed rain or shine unless severe weather interrupts plans.  KFVS12
  • The Cape Girardeau Public Library is hosting a free Backyard BBQ Kickoff on May 30 from noon to 3 p.m. at its back lawn on 711 N. Clark St — the event features games, food, fun performances, and a history talk to celebrate summer reading and America 250.  Fox 23
  • Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 25 at Jackson’s City Cemetery at High and Monroe with patriotic music, remarks by local leaders and the unveiling of a granite memorial for over 130 veterans. CULTURE NEWS

  • Visitors can explore Iron Mountain Railway where volunteers transformed an old train station into a working museum that shares the region's travel history. Guided tours allow guests to see how the site once connected travelers, commerce, and communities.  KFVS12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Beef prices are near record highs as drought and fewer cattle ranchers have tightened the beef supply plus high demand drives the cost, with beef at $6.90 per pound. Experts from the Bureau of Labor Statistics expect prices to remain high for several years.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saxony Lutheran High School’s Class of 2026 graduated on May 17, and the 51 seniors earned college credits and received scholarships as families, teachers, and friends gathered in celebration; the ceremony recognized top scholar Mark Richey and bid farewell to two longtime teachers (marking milestones in the school’s 24th graduating class).  The Cash-Book Journal
  • Cape Girardeau Public Schools will launch the Ascent High School/Recovery High School Program in the fall to help grade 9-12 students focus on recovery while earning their diplomas, with full grant funding and oversight by Cape Central High School Principal Nany Scheller.  KFVS12
  • The Community Counseling Center will host its first Families Thriving Together workshop on June 23 at the Jackson Civic Center. The daylong event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and covers digital wellness and mental health for teens 13 to 17 plus caregivers; registration is required with capacity limited to 50 teens.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Transportation selected American Airlines to provide Essential Air Service at Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois on a two-year contract beginning Aug. 1, with the airline planning 12 weekly round-trip flights from Marion to Chicago O’Hare using 65-seat regional jets & expanding travel options.  Fox 23
