- ➤ The Cape Girardeau Police Department will host the 'Paw-some Pet Wash' fundraiser on June 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Mississippi Mutts — officers will wash dogs to raise funds for the Missouri Police Canine Association Training Conference later this year. Fox 23
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Marissa Roe, a convicted sex offender wanted for failing to register, was taken into custody Tuesday night by the Scott County Sheriff's Office—officials thanked the public for their help. Fox 23
- ➤ Tens of thousands of Americans rely on Social Security and scammers have tried to steal benefits by asking for bank details over the phone; the Social Security Administration now stops phone changes and requires online or in-person updates (to reduce fraud) as scammers threaten arrest and account suspension (which the agency never does). - ➤ Officer Joseph Whistler now faces three federal civil lawsuits alleging excessive force after a deadly chase earlier this year—two cases were filed by Attorney Derrick Williams for incidents in 2021 and 2024 while a Missouri Corrections inmate filed a third case for a 2021 incident, and he is under investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. - ➤ Southeast Missouri State University will host its first Redhawks Accounting Summer Camp on June 13 as a free, one-day event for high school students interested in accounting plus the camp will offer hands-on activities, mentoring from SEMO alumni employed at firms like Ernst + Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers, a scavenger hunt, and a chance to win a $2,500 scholarship with registration open through June 6. - ➤ Southeast Missouri State University's Law Enforcement Academy will get a $1.5 million renovation funded partly by a U.S. Department of Justice grant; the project will add 3,000 square feet of training space + simulation areas and a defensive tactics area to improve training. Fox 23
- ➤ KYTC will reopen KY 1129 between KY 94 and KY 239 in Fulton County tomorrow after completing three new bridges—Sampson Branch Bridge, Brush Creek Bridge and Sublett Creek Bridge that span mile points 7.47 to 7.917. Crews will also reduce Route N to one lane with an 11 foot width restriction from Route 51 to Route 25 in Bollinger and Cape Girardeau counties from Monday June 16 to Friday Aug. 29 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
