- ➤ The Jackson community came together to help uptown stores damaged by a fire on South High Street. Rise — Rebuild was held Thursday evening with live music, food trucks and family activities, and it raised funds to help Sweetheart Florist, Fringe Boutique and MoMo’s Favorite Treats cover costs not paid by insurance. - ➤ The City of Cape Girardeau will celebrate Independence Day at Arena Park on July 4 with festivities starting at 7 p.m. with tailgating and food trucks, followed by a Municipal Band performance and an award ceremony at 8 p.m. plus fireworks at 8:45 p.m. KFVS12

- ➤ Local fire departments from Rockview, Delta, Oran and Benton, plus North Scott County Ambulance Service, responded to a structure fire in Rockview on Wednesday evening—hazardous temperatures made the coordinated effort crucial to keep the community and firefighters safe. Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Jackson R-2 School District is hosting a Bus Driver Academy this Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. at Jackson High School—this event will recruit new bus drivers for safely transporting about 3,000 students over 4,000 miles and includes CDL training for those who need it. Fox 23

- ➤ Commissioners reported at Monday’s meeting that the new jail addition reached substantial completion as Commissioner Charlie Herbst said prisoners will be moved into the facility by mid-August. The State of Missouri Public Service Commission scheduled an inspection of the modular cells on Tuesday—subcontractors are preparing warranty documents while cleaning, tuning and testing of equipment is set for June and most of July.
