  • Kay's Carry On will host a backpack giveaway and educational event on Aug. 17 in Scott City. Local authors will read from works on foster care and guests will enjoy free food and kid activities like balloon art, a bouncy house, and a visit by the Scott City library.  Fox 23

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 21 at 3:21 a.m., officers arrested Jon Primm on the 1000 block of N. Middle after a victim said he struck her with a flashlight and closed fist and pointed a small firearm at her head — Primm admitted to yelling, throwing an item, and threatening her dog.  Fox 23
  • A Mechanicsburg man was sentenced to over 8 years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to attempted murder-for-hire for trying to have his business partner in Florida killed during a January meeting in Missouri — his actions have left the target living in constant fear.  KFVS12
  • Cape Girardeau police responded at 1:30 a.m. on Monday, July 21 to an armed robbery on the 1200 block of South Ellis Street where the victim reported that the suspects pulled them from their vehicle and hit them with a gun while stealing a cell phone — officers later arrested two juveniles, recovered a gun, and turned the suspects over to juvenile authorities.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saint Francis Healthcare System hosted a career day for Cape Girardeau educators, counselors and administrators who toured departments and took part in hands-on activities. They learned about clinical and support roles — the event partnered with the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • The USDA update shows that by July 15, 13,638 wild birds have been infected and by July 18, 1,075 dairy herds and 174,833,348 poultry have been affected, marking a less than 4% increase from June. Cape Girardeau County Health Department said the risk for human cases remains low—70 confirmed cases were reported, including one in Missouri—and advised farmers and hunters to follow safety precautions.  Fox 23
  • A report found Missouri lost 171 veterans to suicide in 2023, exceeding the national average, with most deaths occurring in metro areas and 8% in the southeast. The Missouri Veterans Commission will add measures—such as public health awareness and improved transportation and clinic access—to lower these numbers.  KFVS12
