CRIME NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau police said on July 23 that two armed suspects robbed a woman from her vehicle—stealing a backpack and tackle box—early in the morning on the 700 block of Morgan Oak Street before fleeing.  KFVS12
  • Authorities charged three suspects—Austin D. Larose, Vaquon D. Johnson, and Atyren Z. Daso—in early July for vehicle break-ins and thefts, and police are working with Cape Girardeau and Scott City departments to recover stolen property and locate additional firearms.  Fox 23
  • The Scott County Sheriff's Office is investigating a physical altercation involving the Scott City mayor and a local business owner that happened on July 21 after a council meeting+ officials reported no injuries, no arrests, and that findings will be sent to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.  Fox 23

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Missouri will hold its annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday from Aug. 1 to Aug. 3 so shoppers can buy eligible clothing, school supplies, and computer devices free of tax. The Missouri Department of Revenue set limits at $100 for clothing, $50 for school supplies, and $1,500 for personal computers and peripherals — ensuring clear rules for tax-free purchases.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today at noon, Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony at Shawnee Park Sports Complex for the new Youth Outdoor Sports Complex, which will feature five youth softball/baseball fields and two football/soccer fields. The project—funded by the 2018 Parks, Recreation and Storm Water Tax—will open in 2026 to serve local leagues and tournaments.  KFVS12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Sarah Ann Aydt, a respected member of Saint Francis Healthcare System's internal medicine and pediatrics team, died unexpectedly. She was known for her compassionate care + a passionate advocate, and her love for pickleball + her dedication to patients touched many lives.  Fox 23
  • The Community Counseling Center partnered with local schools including Perryville High, Cape Central High and Cape Central Junior, and Jackson schools to launch the Hope Squad Program, an evidence-based initiative that trains students to support peers facing mental health challenges. The program received funding (from two grants by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks) and will run for two years.  Fox 23

  • The city is breaking ground today on a major expansion at Shawnee Park Sports Complex – the project will add five youth baseball and girls fast-pitch softball fields with artificial turf infields and two new soccer/football fields to boost local tournament play.  Fox 23
