  • Cape Girardeau organizers are asking for local input to plan Riverfest—a free celebration set for Independence Day 2026 that will honor the U.S. 250th anniversary. The event will include a parade, festival, commemorative ceremonies and riverfront fireworks to bring a blend of patriotic pride and hometown charm.  KFVS12
  • Community Counseling Center opened the John A. Hudak Treatment Center at 1987 Rusmar St. yesterday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony; the facility, named for its former executive director, offers short-term beds (up to 90 days) to help those with mental health and substance use challenges using American Rescue Plan Act funds.  Fox 23

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ameren Missouri increased electric rates on June 1, raising average residential bills by about 12% or roughly $14 per month—this change follows a request for system upgrades and cleaner energy, and the company offers programs and online tools to help customers manage costs during the hot summer months.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Zonta Club celebrated Missouri's new law raising the minimum age for marriage to 18 with no exceptions—Gov. Mike Kehoe signed House Bill 737 on July 9, making Missouri the 16th state to end child marriage. The club also praised former state Sen. Holly Rehder for drafting the language and Sen. Jamie Burger for carrying the bill in the Senate.  Fox 23
  • Missouri transferred over $23.5 million from its adult-use marijuana program funds to state agencies following constitutional guidelines and House Bill 10.1035. The Missouri Veterans Commission, Missouri State Public Defender, and Department of Health and Senior Services each received $7.85 million—supporting veteran health care, legal aid for low-income residents, and drug addiction and overdose prevention programs.  Fox 23

  • SEMO Athletics and Walmart are teaming up to launch the Kids Cheer Free program that lets fans 18 and under get free tickets to soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, and baseball games with an adult ticket purchase.
