GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Upcoming changes to Missouri law will require excavators to contact Missouri 811 at least two business days before beginning any digging, and projects must be completed within 21 days so a new notification is needed if work continues after this period. Ameren Missouri advises customers to have underground lines marked each time they dig—helping prevent costly repairs and injuries.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau County received a clean 92-page audit report on Thursday morning when CPA Patrick Kintner found no deficiencies in the review of ARPA funds and key construction projects. The commission approved a change order for the jail and a sole source bid for a toxicology analyzer + other measures to enhance financial accountability.  The Cash-Book Journal
  • A water main break and a faulty valve caused a boil water advisory for about 200 addresses in Cape Girardeau — some residents lost water service. Registered residents received direct notifications and can check the city's advisory dashboard for additional details.  Fox 23
  • Missouri Highway Patrol troopers released safety guidelines for students, parents, and drivers to keep school travel safe this school year. They advised pedestrians to use sidewalks, cyclists to wear helmets, and drivers to avoid passing stopped school buses on two-lane roads—important rules after deadly school bus crashes in 2024.  KFVS12
  • At Thursday morning's meeting, the Cape Girardeau County Commission approved buying 45,000 blue tax receipt envelopes for just over $4,000—ensuring taxpayers have enough records, and Southeast Missouri State President Dr. Brad Hodson was present. Officials also gave updates as Cape Girardeau Emergency Management Director Sam Herndon said FEMA will use the EMA building as its local base and Sheriff Ruth Ann Dickerson noted deputies are training on new jail equipment—County Park North work will move forward with bids for earth work and new sidewalks expected by next Memorial Day.  KFVS12
  • The Cape Girardeau County Commission will hold a public hearing on Aug. 14 at 9 a.m. in Jackson at the County Commission Chambers—residents may email written testimony with their name and address before the hearing to share their input on the new Homestead Property Tax Freeze passed by the state legislature.  Fox 23

  • Screen time can hurt children's minds, said licensed counselor Chelsie Boyd, who noted that too much time on screens may lead to low sleep, sadness, and poor social skills (factors include age, mood and environment). Parents may want to set timers and explain limits to children (a common rule is ten minutes per year of age) to help reduce these issues.  KFVS12
