  • At a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Wednesday, officials celebrated the freshly refurbished World’s Largest Cup of Soft Drink in Cape Girardeau—its makeover included new paint, a vinyl wrap and updated signage with fun facts that mark its eight-year anniversary. The landmark stands 13.74 feet tall and holds 4,730.9 gallons.  Fox 23

  • The Ground-A-Bout opened its fifth location at 2519 East Jackson Boulevard in Jackson — the drive-thru-only spot will operate daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and serve freshly baked pastries, sandwiches, wraps, and breakfast items.  Fox 23

  • Residents in Cape Girardeau should beware of emails, texts, or calls where a robotic voice makes urgent threats to pressure you into sharing personal details+experts with the Better Business Bureau say phishing attempts show red flags like untraceable payment requests and sudden tax claims. People are advised to verify such contacts online and report threatening messages to local police.  KFVS12
  • Police are investigating an early Wednesday morning burglary at a Cape Girardeau business on the 700 block of Broadway Street—$3,500 in merchandise was reported stolen and no arrests have been made.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT named Donnie Brown as the new district engineer for the southeast region on August 20 — he took over the 25-county area after Mark Croarkin became assistant chief engineer.  KFVS12
  • On Wednesday, 25 people from 18 countries took the oath of allegiance in Cape Girardeau to become US citizens as Judge Stephen Limbaugh Jr. led the ceremony—guest speakers Gov. Mike Kehoe and State Treasurer Vivek Malik also attended.  KFVS12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Missouri mandated that all hospitals offer forensic sexual assault exams with the new telehealth system SAFEvT — launched on July 1 to help hospitals without forensic nurses get quick assistance via a tablet. The health department says the system aims to reduce exam delays and support more case prosecutions.  Fox 23
  • Mercy Hospital Southeast received today the American Heart Association's Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus quality award+by following updated research-based guidelines in treating stroke patients in Cape Girardeau. The hospital also earned the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award+which shows its commitment to evidence-based care for patients with diabetes.  Fox 23
