COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Joey Keys, the chief of the Southeast Missouri Food Bank, said hunger is a big problem in rural Missouri. On Tuesday, September 9, the food bank will lead Hunger Action Month events—asking people to wear orange, volunteer, and donate meals to help local families.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southeast Missouri State University announced a new scholarship program on Wednesday, August 27 that automatic awards aid almost 85 percent of students using ACT or SAT scores, GPA, and achievements. The renewable scholarships aim to remove barriers to college—supporting students with strengths in academics, athletics, and leadership.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Twenty-four people from 18 countries gathered at the Rush Hudson Limbaugh Sr. Federal Courthouse today to complete their naturalization ceremony and become U.S. citizens as Governor Mike Kehoe and Treasurer Vivek Malek stressed rights and responsibilities — Cape County Clerk Kara Clark Summers said 21 new citizens registered to vote.  The Cash-Book Journal
  • Today, a new Missouri law, SB150, gives high school graduates free access to career certificate programs with a reimbursement plan to help fill work shortages in fields such as automotive mechanics—HVAC, construction trades, and electrical work. The program will start at the 2026-27 academic year and is expected to cost over $3 million by 2028.  KFVS12
  • Starting today, retailers will not charge state and local sales taxes on diapers, qualifying feminine hygiene, and incontinence items — businesses will now report these sales as negative adjustments on their returns.  KFVS12
  • After Tuesday’s storm, officials reported that the new jail may have been hit by lightning and are testing its electrical systems as plans set prisoner moves for October. The county commission also approved a tax petition with over 3,000 signatures, road upgrades, and equipment purchases for county agencies — including a lift for the jail and a new sheriff’s vehicle.  The Cash-Book Journal
