  • The Safe House of Southeast Missouri held its annual luncheon and award ceremony on August 28 at Century Casino Event Center — where Executive Director Jessica Hill noted that the organization provided safety for 564 clients, answered 815 hotline calls and delivered 4,232 service hours. The event honored volunteers, donors and staff for their support.  Fox 23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Discovery Playhouse has named Courtney Corbett its new executive director — she previously worked with Catholic Charities and Dairy Council and is eager to lead the museum into its 20th year to expand opportunities for children to learn and play.  KFVS12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Drivers heading out for Labor Day travel weekend will face lower gas prices and heavier traffic, according to AAA — Missouri prices average $2.87 per gallon, about 20 to 30 cents less than last year. AAA said leaving earlier and checking vehicles will help travelers avoid heavy congestion on the roads.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Dorena-Hickman Ferry reopened Thursday after being closed since August 23 for dredging in the harbor. It now runs on its summer schedule with the last trip from Kentucky at 6:15 p.m. and the final trip from Missouri at 6:30 p.m. — it accepts cash only.  Fox 23
  • Missouri Department of Conservation officials say hunters must prepare for dove season starting September 1 and continuing until November 29. They remind hunters to follow a daily limit of 15 birds, secure required permits, and use non-toxic shot on designated conservation areas — while observing shooting hours from a half-hour before sunrise to sunset.  KFVS12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials confirmed a child tested positive for pertussis at an early childhood center in Republic, Missouri—raising concerns as students return to class. Nursing supervisor Amber Grant from Cape Girardeau Public Health said parents should enforce proper handwashing and sanitizing routines to help prevent further spread.  KFVS12
