  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri celebrates 25 years of mentorship in Cape Girardeau and has connected youth with caring adult mentors while strengthening school partnerships. The organization will host a celebration on Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Marquette Tower lobby—where community leaders will speak and the Cape Girardeau team will be honored.  Fox 23
  • The 2nd Annual Uptown Scarecrow Contest begins today in Uptown, where local businesses display creative, fall-themed scarecrows—residents may vote in person or online via QR codes until Oct. 23.  Fox 23

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau firefighters responded to a suspicious blaze at a vacant home near North Main, Big Bend, and Olive streets, arriving within four minutes and battling heavy fire from the basement to the upper floors that caused a partial collapse and injured one firefighter who was treated by EMS while mutual aid units assisted as the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office began an investigation.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southeast Missouri State University will hold its annual Patriot Day Ceremony on Sept. 11 from 7:35 to 8:30 a.m. in front of Academic Hall in Cape Girardeau+ the event will honor first responders, military service members, veterans and the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gibson Center leaders say federal Medicaid cuts proposed in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act may harm substance abuse and mental health services today — they warned that fewer services could reverse progress in lowering overdose deaths. The center urges state and federal leaders to act to protect access to critical care.  KFVS12
  • Cape Girardeau County officials announced a major improvement project at North Park Lake that will shrink the lake to match its natural watershed, stabilize eroding shorelines, and add a new playground, restroom, and parking lot with space for 200 vehicles—dedicated bus parking will also be provided. The work will begin soon in phases to ease disruption, and updates will be shared by the Park Department.  Fox 23

  • The Southern 7 Health Department reminds residents to prepare for disasters during National Preparedness Month by following guidelines from Ready.gov. Families are urged to create emergency plans, stock up on supplies, and attend local training sessions—measures that help ensure safety when emergencies occur.  Fox 23
  • Mercy's focus on preventive care saved taxpayers $102 million in 2024 and ranked it among the nation’s top five ACOs—showing a $7 million increase from the previous year. Over the past seven years, its coordinated care approach saved a total of $462 million while meeting strict CMS quality standards.  Fox 23
  • A high school football game between Valle Catholic School and St. Vincent De Paul united fans to raise $1,963.75 to support families facing childhood cancer. Nolan Joggerst—nearing the end of his own cancer treatments—helped ensure the Kutz family received the full donation when his family donated their share.  Fox 23
