COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A maintenance worker at St. Vincent De Paul preschool in Perryville returned a cherished bracelet to a student after it fell into a drain on Monday—he retrieved it the following morning—earning praise from school officials.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau’s Black Forest Haunted Ghost Town will have its final season this year after 30 years, with the family-run attraction set to operate on October 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at 2728 County Road 638—organizers Greg and Darla Macke say they appreciate decades of community support.  KFVS12

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, September 19, the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert at the Dan Cotner Amphitheater in Capaha Park as part of SEMO Family Weekend to send off summer. The 35-member orchestra will play orchestral versions of show tunes, pop songs and patriotic music from films like Star Wars and Superman—audiences should bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the live performance.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Sikeston R-6 School District announced it is partnering with SEMO through the Educators Advantage program—providing tuition discounts on SEMO’s online undergraduate, graduate and paraprofessional pathway programs for teacher development. District and university officials said the collaboration will expand professional development and strengthen education in southeast Missouri.  Fox 23

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation will host its annual Day on the River event on Sept. 20 at Riverfront Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can enjoy boat rides on the Mississippi River, live aquatic displays and kids’ crafts—officials say early arrival is advised for boat rides available until 1:30 p.m. due to river levels.  Fox 23
  • State conservation officials are reviewing drone footage after reports of mountain lions near Perryville earlier this week, though experts believe the images likely show foxes or coyotes, and residents near Legion Lake are urged to follow safety guidance—stay alert and know how to respond if encountering the animals.  Fox 23
  • City officials are working with the Missouri Department of Conservation to improve Capaha Park Pond and address community concerns over excessive algae growth—a contractor with specialized equipment is set to perform a comprehensive cleanup soon.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cape Girardeau Police Department reminded residents that a new Missouri law took effect on Aug. 28 and makes it a crime to get within 25 feet of first responders after they give a warning—violations are classified as a Class A misdemeanor. Police Chief Wes Glueck said the law helps keep police, firefighters and EMS safe while on duty.  Fox 23
