COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A group of friends gathered in the early morning on Sept. 11 at the Cape Girardeau Common Pleas Courthouse to honor first responders by climbing 2,071 steps as a tribute to the heroes of 9/11 — they recorded each climb on a large board to mark the challenge and remember the sacrifice made nearly 25 years ago.  The Cash-Book Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Auditions for the annual Haunted Hall of Horror will be held from September 22 to 26 at A.C. Brase Arena as Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation seeks actors aged 16 or older—applicants must also be available for performances on October 10, 11, 17, 18, 25 and 31 starting at 6 p.m.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The East Prairie school district’s Eagle Closet gives students and families free clothing, food, and household items and is set to move to a permanent location before the end of the year. Social worker Magan Jones, credited by Superintendent Dustin Hicks for her leadership, has helped the program grow — ensuring more help for those in need.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau Police Department re-launched its podcast with new co-hosts, Patrolman Sean Smelser + Public Information Officer Bobby Newton, and will produce weekly episodes that cover day-to-day operations and current case updates. The podcast is intended to offer community insight and build trust between the public and police.  KFVS12
  • The Fruitland Area Fire Protection District will host a dedication and blessing ceremony for Cape Girardeau County’s first SafeHaven Baby Box on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1 (7273 U.S. Highway 61 in Jackson). The baby box gives mothers in crisis a secure, anonymous option and was made possible by local contributions.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • In August, the FDA sent warning letters to five companies about a sunscreen mousse that comes in a container like whipped cream and may not protect your skin as well as creams, lotions or sprays. Heartland dermatologist Dr. Allison Sindle said people should choose approved products—creams or sprays—for the best sun protection.  KFVS12
  • Dr. Fallan Mayabb has joined Cape Care for Women at 211 Saint Francis Drive in Cape Girardeau—she now works for Saint Francis Healthcare System. She earned her medical degree in 2011 from the University of Missouri, finished her residency at Baylor Scott and White, and is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology.  Fox 23
  • The Southern Seven Health Department warned residents that unlicensed sewage disposal contractors are scamming homeowners by abandoning septic system installations and leaving hazardous waste. Residents are advised to verify contractor credentials with the local health department before making payments — a step to avoid public health risks.  Fox 23
