- ➤ The Jackson Backyard BBQ will be held at Jackson Park Band Shell on Saturday, September 27 at 2 p.m.—the $20 all-day admission offers pulled pork sandwiches, chips, soft drinks, lemonade, water and samples from over 20 barbecue teams with live music by three artists. The event has raised over $100,000 since 2019 for first responder families, including support for Cape Girardeau County. KFVS12
- ➤ Mercy Cancer Center is hosting a free family health event on Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at 789 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau—offering free health screenings, live demonstrations, educational resources and family activities including a fire department display, Red Cross blood drive details and appearances by Rowdy the Redhawk and Captain Catfish. - ➤ The Cape Career and Technology Center will celebrate the grand opening of its new welding facility on Wednesday, October 15 with a trade show and open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m. will officially dedicate the center for hands-on training. KFVS12

- ➤ On Saturday, the USDA announced plans to cancel future household food security reports, a decision that local food banks say will make it harder to track who needs help. The final report—covering 2024 data—will be released on October 22. KFVS12
- ➤ Missouri families save up to $60 on diapers and $6 on pads as a new law removes taxes on these essential items — even though the state will lose over $200 million in revenue. The tax exemptions cover diapers, feminine hygiene, and adult incontinence products to help lower costs for families. KFVS12

- ➤ The Community Counseling Center has reinstalled its Suicide Prevention Awareness Month displays at five southeast Missouri sites, including the Cape Girardeau office, with each display featuring a sign stating 'Your story doesn't have to end' plus about 269 colorful pinwheels that represent memorial ribbons and will remain in place through Oct. 1.
