COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kevin Groves restarted his popular Halloween display after stopping two years ago because a neighbor took the spirit from it, decorating eight homes on Brookwood Drive—featuring ghosts, skeletons, pumpkins and zombies for visitors to enjoy. The lights will be turned on Friday, September 26 and donations collected will go to help Semo Pets.  KFVS12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Liberty Days will take place at the Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library in Bloomfield on October 3 and 4 — the event will feature historical reenactments, a flag retirement ceremony, a variety show, and food trucks. More than 400 students from 16 counties plan to join the celebration as they honor military history and heritage.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FRESH Healthy Café launched a Reading Rewards Program that lets children earn a free smoothie for every 10 books they log at N. Kingshighway and Saint Francis Medical Center locations — the program began at Central Junior High and East Elementary and will expand to more schools.  Fox 23
  • SEMO celebrated Constitution Day on September 24 with a campus event featuring Washington University School of Law Dean Stefanie Lindquist who explained how the Constitution continues to guide democracy—Political Science students stressed knowing and defending their rights in today’s political climate.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction of the Route AA bridge over U.S. 60 at Miner will begin in October as demolition of the existing overpass is scheduled from Oct. 7 to Oct. 11 and from Oct. 14 to Oct. 18 nightly between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. KYTC will close KY 70/Tiline Road near Smithland on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30 for culvert repairs — motorists will follow detour routes during the overnight hours.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • During Suicide Awareness month, the Community Counseling Center is linking Cape Girardeau residents to free training, crisis help, and a planned Thrive Conference to break the silence around suicide. Shawni Butler, the center’s Emergency Services Supervisor, said the conference will include breakout sessions on mental health, substance use, and youth issues — providing vital support across several local counties.  Fox 23

SPORTS NEWS

  • Camp Allen Ministries will host its annual Run & Kids Fun Run on Oct. 25 at the campgrounds on Wayne Route F in Greenville. The 5K race, costing $30, will begin at 9 a.m. with registration from 8 to 8:45 a.m.—pre-registration before Sept. 26 secures a T-shirt and the Kids Fun Run is free without one.  Fox 23
