COMMUNITY NEWS

  • PORCH Initiative received a $10,000 grant from the U.S. Bank Foundation to fund programs that boost first-time homeownership and offer financial education—helping South Cape Girardeau residents strengthen community ties.  KFVS12
  • Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 will dedicate the Brad Skelton Memorial Lakes today at noon off County Road 206 — they will hold a picnic after the ceremony to honor Skelton, who served in the National Guard and was killed in Iraq in 2008.  KFVS12

  • On Thursday, a car hit Dexter Cinema in Dexter, damaging a restroom and knocking out its sign—movies still run as scheduled with three other restrooms available.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Meadow Heights R-II School District received a $50,000 donation from Junction 51 Solar to buy new scoreboards, a sound system, and a scorer’s table for its FEMA gymnasium—district officials said the funds will support upcoming school events.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT is hiring flexible shift workers for full-time maintenance and emergency equipment roles ahead of winter weather — the new positions include eight-hour and 12-hour shifts with a starting pay of $19.91 per hour and up to an additional $6 per hour based on area. Applicants can learn more soon as the agency prepares its winter weather response.  KFVS12
  • Cape Girardeau Police Department launched the Blue Envelope Program to improve communication between first responders and people with special needs—partnering with local groups such as SEMO Alliance for Disability Independence, Catholic Charities, Grace Reliant Health Services and The Tailor Institute to hand out free blue envelopes and stickers. The envelopes include important details like emergency contacts and care instructions to guide responders.  Fox 23
