COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cape Area Community Foundation is celebrating 10 years this fall as it has awarded more than $9 million in grants to local nonprofits in education, healthcare, emergency response, and public safety — an initiative that began in 2015 under the late Maurice 'Moe' Sandfort and now serves Cape Girardeau, northern Scott, and Bollinger counties.  Fox 23
  • The Community Partnership of Southeast Missouri announced on Tuesday, September 30 that Dr. Melissa Stickel is no longer its executive director (effective immediately) and Ryan Essex (chief operating officer of the Gibson Center for Behavioral Change) was named interim executive director.  KFVS12
  • Benny Arends, an eighth grader at Jackson Junior High, is using his earned funds—and community support from local donations—to buy candy bars so every student gets a treat this Halloween. He is nearly reaching his goal of 1800 candy bars as local businesses and neighbors have stepped up to help.  Fox 23

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Cape Girardeau Regional Airport secured a new four-year DOT contract with Contour Air for flights to Chicago, Dallas, and soon Pensacola—an arrangement that local travel expert Carolyn Kempf said will help boost travel bookings. Her office is excited to offer bundled travel packages with the new routes.  KFVS12
  • Sierra, a multichannel off-price retailer of active and outdoor products, will open its first Missouri store on Saturday at West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau in a 20,000 square foot space where prices are 20% to 60% lower than many department stores—adding a celebration at 8 a.m. with a live DJ, giveaways, and a hidden hang tag game while donating $10,000 to a local charity.  Fox 23

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a new Essential Air Service contract to Contour Airlines that will keep flights from Cape Girardeau Regional Airport to Chicago O’Hare and add westbound flights to Dallas/Fort Worth starting in December—Contour will also launch seasonal service to Pensacola on April 1.  Fox 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southeast Missouri State University will inaugurate its 19th president, Dr. Brad Hodson, over Homecoming Weekend on Friday, October 17 at 2 p.m. at the Show Me Center—this event marks a new chapter following his appointment in July.  KFVS12
  • Jackson High School held its first Registered Youth Apprenticeship signing this week—student Trustin Grojean signed with Sappington Pro Outdoor to get hands-on job training, and school officials said the program will build future work skills.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau will host a ceremony on Oct. 21 to kick off the Blue Envelope Program—an initiative that aims to improve communication between first responders and people with special needs, and city officials expect it to benefit local and surrounding communities.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau County will host open house events on October 9 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.—one tour at the renovated 1908 Courthouse with guided tours on its modern upgrades and one at the new jail addition showcasing enhanced safety features.  KFVS12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nearly 200 runners from 13 states competed in the 45th annual City of Roses Half Marathon and 5K in Cape Girardeau on Saturday, where Benjamin Schnurbusch finished the 5K in 16:46 and Mercy Green earned top female honors in 24:49. Jack Pazin won the half marathon with Lindsey Luebbers as the fastest woman while runners celebrated with post-race pancakes—timing services were provided by Red Runner Racing.  Fox 23
