- ➤ Cape Girardeau will host the 2025 Color Dash 5K and Fun Walk at Arena Park on October 4th at 10 a.m.—registration runs from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. as the event raises funds for free cancer screenings for Heartland families. KFVS12
- ➤ The Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis will host the SEMO Step Up for Down Syndrome festival on Oct. 4 at Capaha Park Shelter No. 2 in Cape Girardeau. The event starts at 10 a.m.—with a dinosaur-themed awareness walk beginning at 11 a.m., food, games, music, and optional fundraising to support local Down syndrome programs. Fox 23
- ➤ CAPE GIRARDEAU — The board of the Community Partnership of Southeast Missouri announced that Executive Director Dr. Melissa Stickel is no longer with the organization, effective immediately, and named Ryan Essex as interim executive director to guide its transition. The group thanked Stickel for her service and encouraged the community to support Essex in his new role. Fox 23
- ➤ Local artist Craig Thomas is painting an interactive mural on the side of the Charmed building at 130 S. High Street as part of the Uptown Jackson Revitalization Organization project—he began sketching the design on Sept. 22 and will work daily despite weather challenges to finish by Oktoberfest. - ➤ A Consumer Reports survey shows that text and messaging scams targeting college students increased by 50% and tripled for those aged 18-29 as students at SEMO said they received fake school emails and suspicious job postings while experts advise checking sender details to avoid fraud. KFVS12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cape Girardeau County will host an open house Oct. 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. to showcase renovations to the historic 1908 Courthouse, which now houses county administrative offices and features a restored copper dome and modern updates—guided tours and light refreshments will be offered. Fox 23
- ➤ The Cape Girardeau County Commission approved Sheriff Ruth Ann Dickerson to apply for a $194,500 grant from the Mental Health Board to fund a psychiatric doctor for the jail as medical costs rose above $1.1 million. Commissioners also approved contracts for a bridge repair on County Road 501 and drainage work on County Road 330. The Cash-Book Journal
- ➤ Jackson received a $492,870 grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation’s TAP to fund a one-mile trail along Hubble Creek from Jackson High School to near the soccer park—officials said the initial phase will include a six-foot path and future lighting with plans to add a pedestrian bridge later. At its recent meeting, the board approved contracts for pavement improvements, sewer work, generator maintenance and zoning updates and set a public hearing on Oct. 20. The Cash-Book Journal

- ➤ The American Red Cross of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas is urging families to test smoke alarms monthly and rehearse escape plans before Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 5-11, as home fires kill seven people a day in the U.S. Local volunteers have already helped with over 160 home fires—underscoring the need for quick responses in an emergency. - ➤ Mercy Health Foundation Southeast named Amanda Baert and Samantha Rhodes to its board today — they will serve through June 2031 to guide the foundation’s work in providing high-quality care in the region — both bring extensive financial and local philanthropic experience. Fox 23
