  • A national pet adoption event is lowering fees at Southeast Missouri Pets to $50 for heartworm-negative animals four months and older until October 15—efforts aimed at easing the shelter's overcapacity. Executive director Jenn Farmer said adopting a pet is crucial to help the shelter admit more animals in Cape Girardeau.  KFVS12
  • Project Hope 2025 returns to Cape Girardeau this Friday at Shawnee Park Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—offering free employment help, medical services, haircuts, birth certificate assistance and child care as 56 local providers donate their time.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Girardeau Public Schools teacher Theresa Taylor explained that students now complete the simplified FAFSA form more quickly amid a federal shutdown affecting the Education Department's loan services—updates include needing only a name and email for contributors and faster processing of Federal Student Aid IDs. She added that parents and students should verify deadlines and prepare for a FAFSA drop-in event on October 16.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cape Girardeau Fire Department completed training today on a new handheld sonar system (AquaEye) that uses AI to quickly locate bodies in water emergencies. The system (costing $7,000) saw participation from multiple agencies to improve rescue response times.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Southern 7 Health Department announced that its Bundles of Joy Diaper Drive collected more than 3,200 diapers in September to help families facing diaper insecurity in the southern Illinois counties. Donations from local stores such as Dollar General and Kroger will be distributed to families enrolled in the WIC and Head Start programs in the coming days—supporting community health and easing expense burdens for many.  Fox 23
  • Local fire officials remind residents during Fire Prevention Week 2025 to properly charge and store lithium-ion batteries after a recent garbage truck fire may have been linked to improper battery disposal—only the truck was damaged with no injuries reported.
