COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The first Safe Haven Baby Box in Cape County was installed on Oct. 7 at the Fruitland Area Fire Protection District station to allow mothers a safe and anonymous way to surrender their newborns. Local officials said the program—supported by local partners—has already seen two safe surrenders within less than 100 miles, offering a critical lifeline to families in crisis.  The Cash-Book Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 12th annual U.S. Grant Symposium is scheduled for November 7 at 9 a.m. at 401 Independence Street in Cape Girardeau. Hosted by the Kellerman Foundation for Historic Preservation— the free event will examine Ulysses S. Grant’s early military command in southeast Missouri and his legacy as a Union general and president.  KFVS12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Cardinal Biologicals announced it will invest $2.74 million to expand in Cape Girardeau, Springfield, and Joplin by adding a new water-based lab consumables production line at its Cape Girardeau headquarters and creating six new jobs. The locally owned company, which has been part of the community since 2019, received praise from Governor Mike Kehoe—highlighting Missouri’s strength in life sciences.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Childcare centers across southeast Missouri are facing staffing shortages, financial strain and rising demand which forces families to choose care based on cost rather than quality. Local leaders say a new program—Child Care Works—will share childcare costs among the state, families and employers to ease the crisis.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction crews will replace culverts on Route BB from Route ZZ to Route 114 near Sikeston from October 27 through November 14 and the road will be open to local traffic only—drivers must follow a signed detour until the work is finished. Meanwhile, crews will perform bridge maintenance on Route MM near Malden on October 21 and begin applying thermoplastic markings on I-69 starting October 20 with a 55 mph speed limit in the work zone until the project ends by November.  Fox 23
  • Cape Girardeau police announced that parking will be restricted from 5 a.m. Saturday, October 18 on Broadway and nearby streets for the SEMO Homecoming parade. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. and vehicles parked in these areas may be towed until parking is restored after the event.  KFVS12
  • The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance urged homeowners to prepare for earthquake recovery by getting insurance since coverage in high-risk counties dropped from 60.2 percent in 2000 to 10.4 percent in 2023—rising rebuild costs and stricter insurer rules add risk. The department warned that residents should use tools like the upcoming October Great ShakeOut Drill to be better prepared for disasters.  KFVS12
