COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During the Shop with a Hero fundraiser in Dexter, the Missouri State Highway Patrol staged a mock arrest of the Grinch at the Dexter Police Department—officials said he was charged with playful theft of bail bonds. The fun event raised $8,893 and helped kick off the holiday season.  Fox 23
  • Cape West Rotary is holding its 60th annual radio auction Saturday, October 25th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. + Online bidding opens Thursday, October 23rd as all proceeds support community projects through the Cape West Rotary Foundation.  KFVS12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southeast Missouri State University’s Office of Career Services will host the Fall Etiquette Dinner on November 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kem Statuary Hall in the Wehking Alumni Center — the event will help students gain dining etiquette skills and boost their professional networking with a five-course meal and a presentation by President Dr. Hodson.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cape Girardeau Police Department launched the Blue Envelope Program Tuesday to improve communication and safety between law enforcement and individuals with disabilities—partnering with local groups including the SEMO Alliance for Disability Independence, Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri, Grace Reliant Health Services, and The Tailor Institute to distribute resources through partner agencies.  Fox 23
  • Two local mothers using SNAP are worried that if the government shutdown continues, their benefits will be delayed and they will have to cut back on spending by November 1—raising concerns about feeding their children. The SEMO Food Bank warned that more residents may soon need food help if lawmakers do not reopen the government soon.  KFVS12
  • Ameren Missouri reminded customers on Oct 20th that they needed to book a technician visit to reconnect natural gas service before the first freeze hits. About half of households depend on natural gas for heat, so customers are urged to call (1-800-552-7583) as appointments can fill quickly.  Fox 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • During RSV Awareness Month, nursing supervisor Amber Grant said case numbers remain low this fall but will climb in December through February, and she urged residents to practice good handwashing and cough etiquette to protect infants and older adults. She also noted that the Cape County Public Health Center has an RSV vaccine available for adults aged 50 and up—encouraging timely health checkups.  KFVS12
