COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Socktober campaign is underway to collect new socks, underwear, gloves and coats for Cape Girardeau foster children, with donation drop-off sites open through the end of October + local nonprofits support the drive to meet growing needs.  Fox 23

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau warns new homeowners to be alert for junk mail that may include scam offers on mortgage insurance, home warranties, or title recovery. Homeowners are advised to verify any suspicious correspondence by contacting their lender or warranty company directly.  Fox 23
  • Owners Laurie and Rob announced that Soirée by Annie Laurie’s will close at the end of the year because they will not renew the lease—its final day of service is November 26 with a farewell celebration planned that evening—and through December the space will be available for private holiday gatherings.  Fox 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation is asking the public to comment on a proposed rule that would lower the nonresident spring turkey bag limit from two to one. Nonresident landowners may still harvest two birds if only one is taken during the first seven days, and comments must be submitted by Nov. 7.  Fox 23
  • State Sen. Jamie Burger congratulated two Southeast Missouri veterans—Frank Robinson of Perryville and Roger Brooks Sherman of Sikeston—on their induction into the Missouri Veterans Hall of Fame. Robinson led infantry in Vietnam and helped build Missouri’s National Veterans Memorial, and Sherman served in the Korean War while working as an educator and coach for 38 years.  Fox 23
  • The Cape Girardeau Professional Firefighters Union warned city leaders that the community has been without a working ladder truck since October 13—posing a risk for high-elevation rescues and proper fire suppression. The union urged officials to lease a temporary truck and account for the Fire Sales Tax funds to restore public safety.  Fox 23
