COMMUNITY NEWS

  • With federal SNAP benefits paused due to the ongoing government shutdown, the Southeast Missouri Food Bank is boosting operations – adding mobile food pantries and adjusting delivery routes to meet rising need across its 16-county area. Community members are encouraged to donate and volunteer to support local partner pantries and shelters.  KFVS12
  • Taco John’s is offering free Community Support Specials that include a Beef or Bean Burrito and junior Potato Olés® at all locations from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 to help those in need—each Taco Bravo sold on Nov. 6 will trigger a donation to local food banks. This initiative builds on a local franchise’s recent act of generosity.  Fox 23

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation starts its annual trout program today and will stock about 9,200 rainbow trout in four southeast Missouri waters including Capaha Park Pond to offer local catch-and-release fishing until January 31, 2026+ anglers must follow gear rules using only flies, artificial lures and unscented plastic baits, and those aged 16 to 64 need a valid permit with trout permits available starting February 1.  KFVS12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cape Girardeau Firefighters union said Ladder 4 was repaired and returned to full service on Friday, October 31+ the union thanked the local mechanic and repair shops while it continues negotiating a new contract with the city after nearly 2,000 days since the last one ended.  KFVS12
  • Governor Mike Kehoe and the Missouri Department of Social Services announced a statewide food drive that will run from Nov. 3 to Dec. 12 to help Missourians affected by the federal shutdown. State employees will donate nonperishable items or money, and contributions will benefit regional food banks through Feeding Missouri—boosting local support.  Fox 23
  • The Missouri Department of Transportation and Missouri Department of Conservation have received federal grant funding to study wildlife-vehicle collisions and find road segments with many crashes. Researchers will rank these areas and propose affordable fixes + these steps will guide future improvements to keep drivers and animals safe.  Fox 23

  • The American Red Cross is reminding residents to test their smoke alarms, replace batteries if needed, and review escape plans as clocks will fall back on Sunday, Nov.2 to help protect against home fires.  Fox 23
  • The Missouri Department of Conservation is warning residents to be careful during a bird flu outbreak after tests confirmed the virus in sick and dead waterfowl and raptors. Officials said hunters must handle birds safely and keep pets away from dead birds — cooking poultry properly makes it safe to eat.  KFVS12
  • Bobbi Palmer was honored with the Sister Jane Mission Award at Saint Francis Healthcare System during the celebration of Saint Francis of Assisi — an event that recognized her dedication to the system’s core values of compassion, stewardship, and excellence.
