COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Today the Shawnee District of the Greater St. Louis Area Council launches its 40th Annual Scouting for Food drive — the largest single-day canned food collection — as about 20,000 Scouts and volunteers from 63 counties work to gather nonperishable items, and residents are asked to leave filled bags by 10 a.m. on Nov 22 to support local food pantries. - ➤ Old Town Cape, Inc. will hold its seventh annual Christmas tree lighting on Nov. 28, 2025 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in downtown Cape Girardeau + Santa and Mrs. Claus will light a 30-foot tree at 6:20 while food trucks, live music, and festive activities are planned. Fountain Street will be closed to vehicles from 2 p.m. + Neighbors are invited to join the celebration. Fox 23
- ➤ Fruitland Area Fire Protection District announced that its Sirens and Santa event will return this year. Fire crews will start nightly visits at 6 p.m.—families are encouraged to listen for sirens as Santa makes his way through the community with dates and locations listed in the district’s comment section. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cheryl Anne Scherer's family donated to the SEMO anthropology lab on November 14 at Rhodes gas station in Scott City (the site where a memorial was placed nearly 50 years after she went missing) to support its work in identifying old human remains. KFVS12
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ This weekend, hunters in Cape Girardeau must bring their deer to testing stations to check for chronic wasting disease — a process required by law after detections in Southeast Missouri. Wildlife officials warn that failing to telecheck by 10 p.m. on the day of harvest could lead to serious effects on the deer herd and local hunting practices — urging strict compliance. KFVS12
- ➤ Couple with Cape Girardeau roots now living near St. Augustine started a project called Once Was Lost that turns beach trash into art and useful items. They will restore the Moulin a Vent into a research and sustainability platform—public donations help fund their work. KFVS12
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Missouri officials announced all SNAP recipients will receive their full November benefits after federal funding was restored via the FY26 Appropriations Act — signed on November 12. The state is updating its system to send remaining balances automatically to those who received partial payments — no action is needed from recipients. Fox 23
